Diclofenac Sodium
Diclofenac Sodium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that works by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation used to treat mild to moderate pain, or signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It may also be used for the relief of osteoarthritis, as well as for other uses. Its effects can be felt within 1 hour. Diclofenac, like other NSAIDs, is often used as first line therapy for acute and chronic pain and inflammation. However, your doctor or pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Diclofenac was the product of rational drug design based on the structures of phenylbutazone, mefenamic acid, and indomethacin.
Depending on the treated condition, it may be used regularly or only as needed. Follow the instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist. You should not use diclofenac if you are allergic to it, or if you have ever had an asthma attack or severe allergic reaction after taking aspirin or an NSAID. When administered intramuscularly it is at least comparable to, and frequently superior to, many narcotic and spasmolytic combinations. It is often used in combination with misoprostol to prevent NSAID-induced gastric ulcers.
Take diclofenac exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. This medication should be swallowed whole. Use the lowest dose that is effective in treating your condition. It should not be split, crushed or chewed. It is often used in combination with misoprostol as a gastro-protective agent in patients with high risk of developing NSAID-induced ulcers. Each person may react differently to a treatment. If you think this medication may be causing side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Diclofenac is a potent inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase in vitro and in vivo, thereby decreasing the synthesis of prostaglandins.
