Modafinil
Modafinil is a stimulant used to improve wakefulness in patients with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or shift work disorder. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. Modafinil is used to improve symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to help with tiredness and fatigue in people with narcolepsy and multiple sclerosis. The exact mechanism of action is unclear, although in vitro studies have shown it to inhibit the reuptake of dopamine. Other medicines can be used to treat ADHD. Alternative measures such as good sleep hygiene can improve tiredness and fatigue.
Modafinil activates glutamatergic circuits while inhibiting GABA.
